Australia has a diverse agricultural, fisheries and forestry sector, producing a range of crop and livestock products. Regulatory barriers, supply chain disruptions, ESG pressures and geopolitical tensions are driving a need to assess resilience in regional production of agricultural inputs and outputs. It will be vital to be at the forefront of the industry and disrupt international markets with innovative regional manufacturing to ensure sustained future success. To support regional manufacturing of on-farm inputs and outputs, it will be necessary to identify which inputs and outputs have the best potential for regional manufacturing and would deliver the strongest impact. We understand that the National Reconstruction Fund (NRF) aims to support the development of manufacturing capabilities and industries in regional areas. If the benefits case is compelling, the NRF could be leveraged to descale and decentralise the manufacturing of on-farm inputs and outputs. We will conduct desktop analysis and roundtables with industry to help evaluate the potential economic, social and environmental impacts to regional communities, as well as a high-level supply chain analysis.
To ensure sustained success, it will be important to uncover the technologies available to enable regional manufacturing of on-farm inputs and outputs. Recommendations will be developed for policymakers regarding the changes that need to be implemented to facilitate local manufacturing of on-farm inputs and outputs, and the technologies that could facilitate this transition.
