This project seeks to prove the science and economics of a proposed biorefinery in the Burdekin sugarcane region of Australia, that would convert sugarcane juice to glycols and biomass to energy (syngas and hydrogen). Global research into biorefineries has escalated in recent years, as businesses transition to renewable and sustainable feedstocks and reduce reliance on petrochemicals.

This project funds a literature review of Farther Farms, Inc and its pressurised CO2 technology that claims to support the storage and distribution of fresh foods without needing refrigeration. If proven, this technology has the benefit to add value across multiple channels and markets in Australia and globally, responding to the growth in online food delivery, meal kit programs and the importance of reducing food waste.

Whole of beef supply chain waste mapping and interventions

This project involves actively measuring waste along the beef supply chain in Australia and implementing strategies to reduce it, in a similar way to the UK's Waste & Resources Action Plan (WRAP), which saved the pork value chain $800,000. As well as increasing trust and collaboration amongst supply chain partners, it's envisaged the project will find new sources of revenue and inform the High Value Food Program on alternative waste streams which may be transformed.
