Assistive technology in shearing: sensing

The project aims to mitigate the risk of injury to the workforce in sheepshearing and improve the process's productivity. Specifically, it intends to (1) optimize and validate a set of wearable sensors that the shearers can wear to inform the users on the state of fatigue (and the risk of injury) of the users and (2) based on objective data, design and construct a motorised ceiling harness with the appropriate intelligence to vary the amount of support provided while allowing the user to move freely. Conventional harnesses are constructed out of springs, which do not allow a shearer to rest upon it when fatigued completely, require the shearer to pull against it when intending to move and are not capable of adapting the amount of support it provides according to the condition of the user.

Sire Evaluation Link Sires 2022-2025

This project provides strong and robust linkage to all standard sire evaluation sites joining for a 2023, 2024 and 2025 drop. Australian Merino Sire Evaluation Association (AMSEA) will oversee the operation of up to 8 sire evaluation sites around Australia. All sites are operated independently and produce results that are specific to each site (Site Reports using within flock raw data, sire adjusted means and flock breeding values). In order for sires entered at different sites to be directly compared (Merino Superior Sires and MERINOSELECT), link sires need to be used across the sites.

Fit to Lamb Phase 1: Mortality Database

This project is a component of the Sheep Reproduction Strategic Partnership. It is estimated that approximately 6.9 million lamb and 367,500 ewe deaths per year are attributable to dystocia. Gaps in available data mean that current sheep management and selection recommendations related to dystocia are based on limited evidence. Phase one will re-analyse pooled data and will identify known and potential risk factors for different causes of death in lambs, including dystocia. This will inform recommendations for management and selection strategies specific to ewe age, lamb birth type, breed and production environments.
