Whale entanglement mitigation program - understanding whale population dynamics, entanglement dynamics and gear modifications to reduce entanglements in WRL gear

The Whale Entanglement Mitigation Program aims to understand whale population dynamics, entanglement dynamics, and develop gear modifications to reduce entanglements in Western Rock Lobster (WRL) gear. By studying humpback whale migration patterns, identifying entanglement dynamics, and determining the population size of Western Australian humpback whales, the program will inform targeted mitigation strategies. It will also explore innovative measures to minimize entanglements and provide support to gear disentanglement operators. These efforts will contribute to the industry's social license, protect the welfare of whales, and ensure the long-term sustainability of the WRL industry. Dissemination of research outcomes will enhance public awareness and support for conservation efforts.
