Development of "guidance" for conducting stock assessments in Australia

The development of "guidance" for conducting stock assessments in Australia is aimed at standardizing and improving the quality of stock assessments conducted by fisheries research agencies. Currently, there is variability in the modeling approaches, data analysis, and level of peer review undertaken across jurisdictions. The guidance aims to provide a set of stock assessment guidelines that describe each method used in Australia, including required data, levels of uncertainty, and pros and cons. By providing transparency in the modeling process, the guidance helps to address controversy and ensure best practices in fisheries management. Additionally, the project evaluates the need for a national stock assessment working group to provide ongoing updates to the guidelines and address jurisdictional stock assessment issues. Overall, the project enhances the accuracy and consistency of stock assessments, leading to more effective fisheries management in Australia.
