Development of a national waste management strategy for primary industries focusing on plastics (hard & soft), animal waste and hard waste such as workshop waste
Agriculture, fisheries and forestry produce a large amount and diversity of waste with the disposal of waste often involving environmentally harmful practices (including burning, on-farm burying and dumping), landfill and the unproductive use of ‘end of first use resources. Opportunities exist to move towards more sustainable management of waste where there is less waste produced and processes are in place to recycle or safely dispose of the waste that is produced. There is also the prospect to implement the principles of a circular economy whereby resources continue to be used within the primary industries sector. This project aims to align with National Waste Policy and provide clear implementation guidance to industry. Significant advances are currently being made in how industries think about and respond to their waste issues and the agriculture, fisheries and forestry sectors need to actively be part of this exciting change. The outcome is to ensure that the agriculture, fisheries and forestry sectors have a clear understanding of how they can deal with waste issues and provide appropriate support through extension guidance and materials. Primary industries are potentially well-placed to respond to changing government and community expectations with respect to waste and indeed implement some innovative solutions to reducing the production of waste and alternative methods for reusing and recycling.
