Understanding water quality risk for the sustainable and efficient production of Pacific and Sydney Rock Oysters

The Macleay River is a typical oyster farming estuary that experiences a range of water quality issues. For the first time, this project will collect and analyse very detailed water quality information from this estuary that will be used to build predictive models to show the impact of poor water quality events such as flooding, bushfire runoff, acid sulphate runoff, de-oxygenated water, disease, low salinity and sewage spills on estuaries farming Sydney rock and pacific oysters.

Insights into barriers and bridges to the producer adoption of multi-week and seasonal climate forecasts

The accurate prediction of weather is critical to the success of agricultural industries. This project will investigate farmers' use of multi-week (2-8 weeks) and seasonal climate forecasts (1-6 months) through in-depth interviews with stakeholders from the meat, dairy, grain, wine and sugar industries, to determine ways to increase the uptake of climate information to improve productivity and profitability.

Updating Shipping Route Data for the Heat Stress Risk Assessment (HSRA) Model

The current heat stress risk assessment (HSRA) model used when transporting livestock in ships relies on historical weather data for routes to port, but climatic conditions may vary. This project will deliver an updated data set of climatic conditions and variability on sailing routes to 63 ports, that will be fed into the HSRA model as it undergoes an upgrade.

North-East Victoria vineyard smoke sensor network

This project aims to deliver an early warning network of smoke sensors that assesses vineyard exposure to smoke in North-East Victoria, one of the most bushfire-prone wine regions in Australia. The network of 100 sensor stations will record, analyse and report the exposure of wine grapes to individual smoke events and accumulated seasonal smoke exposure. An electronic dashboard will provide information back to producers and inform critical business decisions such as grape testing, vineyard management, and winemaking strategies to manage smoke effects. The network has the potential to be deployed nationally and exported.
