Understanding water quality risk for the sustainable and efficient production of Pacific and Sydney Rock Oysters

The Macleay River is a typical oyster farming estuary that experiences a range of water quality issues. For the first time, this project will collect and analyse very detailed water quality information from this estuary that will be used to build predictive models to show the impact of poor water quality events such as flooding, bushfire runoff, acid sulphate runoff, de-oxygenated water, disease, low salinity and sewage spills on estuaries farming Sydney rock and pacific oysters.

Preliminary evaluation of electro stunning technology for farmed Barramundi

The use of humane harvest methods for fish and livestock is increasingly important to consumers and producers. The Australian Barramundi Farmers Association (ABFA) identified electro-stunning as a technology of interest to optimise the welfare of the fish while maintaining product quality. This project reviewed all available information and made recommendations to help shape the direction of future R&D into electro-stunning and its suitability for the barramundi industry.

Abalone Viral Ganglioneuritis (AVG) R&D Needs Workshop

Abalone Viral Ganglioneuritis (AVG) disease is caused by a herpesvirus and was first detected in Victoria in December 2005. Since May 2021, cases of AVG in Victoria have been confirmed as far east as Cape Otway and as far west as the Discovery Bay Marine Park. This review will support those involved in the outbreak and urgently seek solutions through researching current biosecurity protocols, options for surveillance and diagnostic tools to aid rapid detection, to future proof the industry.

Can novel seismic survey sources mitigate potential impacts to fisheries?

This project aims to alleviate tensions between the fishing industry and proponents of 3D Marine Seismic Surveys (MSS), used by the petroleum industry to locate potential oil and gas deposits. It will test new seismic sources or ways of using current sources to mitigate potential impacts on marine animals, by assessing their impact on the commercial scallop and the southern rock lobster.

A review of fisheries enhancement methods to promote profitability and sustainability in Australian fisheries

This project aims to increase the uptake of fisheries enhancement, the release of fish bred in aquaculture into the ocean to enhance Australian marine fisheries, by consolidating clear comparative data on the costs and benefits of each approach and how they can be most effectively applied in different scenarios. A decision support tool will be developed to enable managers to readily incorporate these approaches with other fishery management considerations.
