Trials of oceanographic data collection on commercial fishing vessels in SE Australia

The project on trials of oceanographic data collection on commercial fishing vessels in Southeast Australia offers several benefits for fisheries management and scientific research. By utilizing the existing network of commercial fishing vessels, the project provides a cost-effective and extensive platform for collecting fine-scale spatial and temporal oceanographic data. This data is crucial for understanding fish behavior, feeding patterns, and spawning, as well as the oceanographic factors that influence these dynamics. With access to high-resolution sub-surface oceanographic data, fishers can improve their targeting and achieve higher catch rates. Additionally, the project enhances the understanding of the relationship between oceanographic conditions and catch rates, reducing the assumption that changes in catch rates solely reflect stock abundance. By providing near real-time quality-controlled data to fishers and oceanographers, the project supports habitat characterization, targeting of fishing efforts, and the development of improved analysis and forecasts of oceanic conditions. The publicly available data contributes to safe maritime operations, sustainable resource management, and enhances the understanding of drivers of change in marine ecosystems.
