The development of practical measures to benchmark pig welfare in the Australian pork industry
The current project was conducted to develop a tool/protocol to form metrics to benchmark pig welfare on farm. It aimed to identify and examined the suitability of a range of reliable, practical and repeatable animal-based welfare indices for inclusion in a practical on-site pig welfare benchmarking tool to be applied by Australian producers for self auditing purposes. This protocol will be applicable to sows and growing/finishing pigs, across all stages of production and within all forms of production system.
