Sex selection genes from fruit fly species for use in SITplus

This investment is contributing to an improved understanding of the genetics involved in developing fit, male-only lines of Queensland fruit fly. Such fruit flies are being utilised in the sterile insect technique (SIT) programs being supported through the Hort Frontiers Fruit Fly Fund and the SITplus initiative, in order to protect Australian fruit production from the pest fly and to preserve market access. The knowledge the research develops will be used to develop a suitable strain of male-only fly for production and delivery from the 'Qfly factory' that has been established in Port Augusta, South Australia, under previous investments.
