QX Seminar and RD&E Prioritisation Workshop
The workshop conducted in response to the QX disease outbreaks in NSW brought several benefits. By convening the workshop, it provided a platform for 27 participants to gather and explore short and long-term research and development ideas to effectively control, manage, and co-exist with the disease. The attendees were exposed to 11 presentations covering past research and new proposals, allowing for knowledge sharing and collaboration. The evaluation of ten projects using attractiveness and feasibility analysis identified most of them as worthy of support. The workshop's outcome was the production of a list of priority projects, providing a clear roadmap for allocating limited FRDC oyster RD&E funds effectively. The recommendations generated from the workshop offer specific actions to address the challenges posed by the disease, including continued funding for the QX resistance breeding program, supporting genomics for strain typing, exploring cost-saving measures, investigating RRRO spat production for research trials, considering a QX research coordinator, and potentially supporting a linkage proposal to study factors preventing QX disease expression in RRRO. These recommendations serve as actionable steps to enhance research, management, and control measures against QX disease, ultimately benefiting the oyster industry in NSW.
