Integrating indigenous fishing: extending adoption pathways to policy and management

The project on Integrating indigenous fishing: extending adoption pathways to policy and management brings several benefits. Firstly, it aims to document the impediments and opportunities for Indigenous engagement and adoption of Indigenous Reference Group (IRG) project outputs across fisheries management jurisdictions in Australia. By understanding the information needs, progress, challenges, and opportunities faced by fisheries management agencies in integrating Indigenous fishing research and development (R&D) outputs into their policies and management, the project will establish effective means to deliver policy and management outcomes. This will enhance Indigenous rights, interests, opportunities, and engagement in Australia's fisheries, contributing to self-determination and economic development opportunities arising from Indigenous cultural assets and associated rights. Additionally, the project seeks to build Indigenous leadership capacity in shaping fisheries policy and management at the highest level, with the Indigenous principal investigator providing cultural advice and insight. Overall, the project fosters collaboration, knowledge exchange, and capacity building to support Indigenous participation and decision-making in fisheries management.
