Enhanced Education and Engagement with NSW Commercial Fishers re Biosecurity with focus on White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV)
The project on Enhanced Education and Engagement with NSW Commercial Fishers regarding biosecurity, with a focus on White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV), brings several benefits. Firstly, it aims to improve the in-field identification of aquatic pests by fishers over the long term. By refreshing the knowledge of fishers about WSSV and associated diseases through a targeted Extension Program, the project addresses the need for continued education and instruction to keep biosecurity risks at the forefront of fishers' awareness. Secondly, the project emphasizes the importance of early detection of biosecurity threats. Despite concerns about the impact on business, case studies demonstrate that early detection is crucial in eliminating biosecurity threats. The program focuses on conveying this understanding to fishers through informative materials and engagements. Lastly, the project seeks to enhance community and industry awareness of the threats posed by aquatic biosecurity. By targeting high-risk vectors, such as recreational fishers using imported green prawns as bait, and implementing a dedicated social media campaign, the project aims to saturate popular platforms and raise awareness among the broader NSW community. The objectives of the project include improving biosecurity awareness, emphasizing early detection, and promoting awareness of the ecological impact of using imported green seafood as bait.
