Development of resources and equipment to enable best practice in the humane dispatch of sharks caught by commercial fishers in the NT
The development of resources and equipment for the humane dispatch of sharks caught by commercial fishers in the Northern Territory (NT) aims to ensure the well-being of aquatic animals and meet animal welfare standards. The project addresses the need to establish workable and effective standards for handling and dispatching sharks, specifically in the NT shark fishery. The research will determine the brain location of commonly captured shark species in the NT and evaluate different methods for rapid brain distruction to develop guidelines and best practices for dispatch. By identifying the most efficient and humane methods, the project will contribute to minimizing stress and maximizing the quality and shelf life of the fish products. The industry-driven project will update existing codes of practice and electronic resources, providing valuable information to the commercial fishing industries in the NT. Ultimately, this project will support the industry in maintaining its social license to fish and meeting fish welfare challenges under the new Animal Protection Act and Regulations in the NT.
