Understanding water quality risk for the sustainable and efficient production of Pacific and Sydney Rock Oysters

The Macleay River is a typical oyster farming estuary that experiences a range of water quality issues. For the first time, this project will collect and analyse very detailed water quality information from this estuary that will be used to build predictive models to show the impact of poor water quality events such as flooding, bushfire runoff, acid sulphate runoff, de-oxygenated water, disease, low salinity and sewage spills on estuaries farming Sydney rock and pacific oysters.

A review of fisheries enhancement methods to promote profitability and sustainability in Australian fisheries

This project aims to increase the uptake of fisheries enhancement, the release of fish bred in aquaculture into the ocean to enhance Australian marine fisheries, by consolidating clear comparative data on the costs and benefits of each approach and how they can be most effectively applied in different scenarios. A decision support tool will be developed to enable managers to readily incorporate these approaches with other fishery management considerations.

Understanding flesh colour variation in Atlantic salmon: Molecular mechanisms and genetic effect

This project made critical findings on flesh colour variation in Atlantic Salmon in Tasmania. The investigation into the correlation of colour variation with high seawater temperature delivered new insights into thermal tolerance and genetics in Atlantic salmon, and their performance in a context of climate change and global warming.

People development program: Aquatic animal health training scheme - Dr Susan Kueh

Lack of easy access to fish health veterinary services is limiting the expansion of aquaculture in Western Australia. This project will fund a Principal Investigator to complete an intensive aquatic animal health fellowship program at the The Australian College of Veterinary Scientists to benefit the fisheries industry.
