Lifting farmgate profitability through high value modular agroforestry

This project will address the development and adoption of knowledge to support targeted integration of trees into agricultural landscapes where they will improve farm-level profitability. This will be achieved through development of the novel concept of high value modular agroforestry. When adopted by farmers, this system will bring multiple benefits for improving management of soil and water resources and help farmer and farm enterprises to be more resilient to seasonal and long-term climatic extremes. Through targeting the right trees to the right place and adapting high value agroforestry systems to different enterprises, this project aims to increase adoption of high value agroforestry systems and improve farm-level productivity by at least 10% across much of the agricultural landscapes of southern Australia.

Root-borne diseases are increasingly affecting tree production nurseries, lowering productivity and profitability. This project will improve nursery management by defining the right balance of fertilizer, fungicide and microbial inoculum to break the disease cycle, and use field trials to refine treatments to improve establishment and resilience post-planting.

This project forms part of a series that aims to at least double the rate of genetic gain in pine tree breeding in Australia. This project will focus on the extensive network of trials and orchards in the Gippsland region of Victoria to further implement cutting-edge single-step genomic selection, provide pedigree and identity assurance for the radiata pine breeding and deployment populations, and deliver new, high-throughput sample processing methods.
