The Grains Challenge initiative provides a platform for startups to introduce deep tech innovations to the grains Industry, addressing crucial challenges hidden beneath fields and farmlands. The agriculture sector in Australia requires diverse and adaptable deep tech solutions, ranging from biotech and automation to supply chain management and new materials. With unpredictable weather patterns and increasing value chain risks, the industry is ripe for reinvention beyond traditional tools and practices.

Current opportunity

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) is fully funding 4 startups to receive personalised support. We are looking for companies working on climate & sustainability, seed & plant innovation, market volatility, and supply chain and trade. For 6 months, we will work with you on your business's unique needs and goals and fast-track you into the grain industry.

Fast Start is a 6-month coaching program where you set the goals and we help you to get there. We help you to adapt your deep technology to solve challenges in the grains industry. Our experts-in-residence will guide and coach you on the value chain and how to translate and integrate your technology for commercial adoption:

  • Establishing new partnerships with the grains industry
  • Increasing engagement for trials and technology validation
  • Getting investment ready
  • Getting sponsored projects.

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and Cicada Innovations are on a mission to find and help innovators translate deep tech solutions into commercial impact for the grains industry.

The GRDC’s purpose is to invest in research, development and extension (RD&E) to create enduring profitability for Australian grain growers.

They invest in RD&E projects to deliver new and improved varieties, farming practices, technologies and capability to the Australian grains industry. These investments drive the discovery, development and delivery of world-class innovation.
