Assessment of Grain Edge® technology to meet Australian government quarantine requirements for imported grain

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

The proposed assessment of a technology to meet Australian government quarantine requirements for imported grain project will provide the fundamental data that supports future applications by the MLA members to import grain, giving them options on how to maintain productivity during periods of domestic low supply and high prices.

Longitudinal analysis of antimicrobial resistance of grain-fed beef cattle

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

PROJECT: Previous Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) projects (Barlow et al. 2015; Barlowet al. 2017) conducted slaughter surveillance in2013 at 31 Australian abattoirs on grass-fed, grain-fed, veal and dairy cattle. In general, resistance to antimicrobials of critical and high importance in human medicine was either absent orat very low prevalence....

Antimicrobial resistance surveillance of bovine respiratory disease pathogens

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

This project conducted pilot surveillance of resistance of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) pathogens to common veterinary antimicrobial agents across seven Australian feedlots in 2019, to encourage the adoption of best practice antimicrobial stewardship practices by the industry.

Calibration of a remote early disease identification system for Australian feedlots

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

This project evaluated data from two Australian feedlots to determine potential associations between behaviour, lung condition(pleurisy) and carcase outcomes in cattle with Bovine Respiratory Disease, using the remote early disease identification (REDI) system.

Effect of liver defects on carcase characteristics, performance and health

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

This project will examine the effect of liver defects on carcase characteristics, performance and health of feedlot cattle. It is expected that the impact of liver abscess and liver fluke (and any other pertinent liver conditions) will be quantified across three feedlots supplying one abattoir.

Evaluation of a Mycobacterium cell wall

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

This project will investigate the potential of an innate immune stimulating compound, a Mycobacterium cell wall fraction, to provide short term, broad-based disease protection against bovine respiratory disease (BRD) until protective responses from vaccination develop. We will also investigate the potential for the MCWF, when co-administered with BRD vaccines, to...

Development of a novel oral vaccine for Bovine Respiratory Disease logo
Research project

Development of a novel oral vaccine for Bovine Respiratory Disease

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

This project will determine whether an oral vaccine platform can induce specific immunity for bovine respiratory disease in cattle. If deemed successful, further research and development will be required to determine the value proposition of oral vaccine.

Research project

Determination of bovine respiratory disease

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

This project will determine the accuracy(sensitivity, specificity) and ability to determine stage of disease for a range of currently available and developing bovine respiratory disease diagnostic tests relative to the gold standard of pulmonary lesions at the time of diagnosis.

Bovine respiratory disease pathogen antimicrobial resistance surveillance and genetic sequencing

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

This project will conduct bovine respiratory disease pathogen surveillance at eight Australian feedlots to understand the correlation between use of in-feed and injectable meta-phylaxis on antimicrobial resistance. In addition, long range sequencing of Pasteurella multicide and Mannheimia hemolytica will occur to understand genetic mechanisms driving antimicrobial resistance.
