Analysing production costs of whole v immunocastrated males
APL has previously conducted research studying the effects of immunocastration (IC), such as improvement of pork eating quality and affect on P2 backfat. However, while approximately 60 per cent of the Australian herd utilises IC in their production, it is understood that the remaining portion may not use this technology due to the perception that the costs outweigh the benefits.
Due to this, APL conducted a comprehensive benefit cost analysis, which was completed in October 2021. This research considered the industry-wide benefits and costs for producers and consumers of IC of pigs produced for the fresh pork market. This increased understanding of the costs involved can aid producers in making an informed decision for their farms and potentially aid in reducing farm production costs.
