Biopolymer vaccine delivery vehicle for single injection Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae vaccine and duration of immunity

This project aimed to trial a new vaccine delivery vehicle (a substance that is formulated as part of a vaccine to enhance its ability to induce protection against infection) in pigs in order to vaccinate against a bacterium (Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, APP) that causes pneumonia resulting in devastating mortality rates of pigs on Australian farms. If successful, this new vaccination delivery system will have a lasting effect on the immune response of pigs, eliminating the need for a second or third vaccination, which is currently the case. A bioencapsulation technology for vaccines has been successful in building immunity to cattle ticks in a single dose vaccination in North Queensland, and we aim to apply the same system to diseases in pigs.
