Sophie’s BioNutrients: Seeking strategic partnerships to scale microalgae-based protein using precision fermentation

Opportunity for

  • Research and manufacturing partners in precision fermentation
  • Biotech or food-tech scale-up and pilot production facilities
  • Investors and commercial partners to support local commercialisation

Opportunity description

Industry challenge

As demand grows for sustainable and hypoallergenic protein alternatives, many existing plant-based options fall short on nutritional completeness, allergen reduction, or cost-effective production. There is a global opportunity to develop next-generation proteins that are complete, safe, low-footprint, and scalable. Sophie’s BioNutrients has developed a microalgae-based protein grown via dark precision fermentation (not photosynthesis). Their product is a complete protein, hypoallergenic, high in calcium, and neutral in taste, addressing key barriers in the plant-based protein market.

Current opportunity

Current opportunity Singapore-based startup Sophie’s BioNutrients is seeking to engage with partners and investors in Australia to support:

  • Establishment of local operations and biotech infrastructure
  • Access to contract manufacturers (CDMOs/CMOs) with experience in fermentation scale-up
  • Ecosystem connectors in marine biotechnology, microalgae and precision fermentation The company achieved successful 3,000L fermentation trials, and is 95% through the EFSA approval pathway with a focus to undertake final industrial-scale trials. They have early customer traction in Taiwan and multiple European letters of intent.

Opportunity background

With roots in Singapore and operations in Taipei, Sophie’s BioNutrients has developed a globally relevant solution to food sustainability. The company leverages food manufacturing and agricultural by-products as feedstock for precision fermentation, offering both circular economy and nutritional innovation benefits. Its protein is free of common allergens, boasts full amino acid coverage, and avoids the “beany” flavour often associated with plant-based proteins. The team is exploring expansion into either Canada or Australia, with a strong preference for Australia due to its agricultural strength, potential energy affordability, and the vibrant biotech and research ecosystem. They are currently engaging with stakeholders to better understand the landscape and locate strategic entry points.
