BeefUp Coordination 2020-2022

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

The purpose of the project is to support Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) in the coordination, planning, promotion, delivery and evaluation of twenty-one Beef Up Forums across Queensland, the Northern Territory and the Kimberley and Pilbara regions of Western Australia from 1 July 2019 to 30 June 2022.

Grazing with Self Herding to Improve Performance of Pastoral Cattle

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

This project was designed as a proof-of-concept to test the effectiveness of self-herding for grazing land management and as Australian Farm Institute (AFI) re management tool. Self-herding methods were analysed to determine if it can reduce grazing pressure on over-used areas and encourage cattle to graze previously un-used areas.

Feeding Leucaena to manage the rumen for performance

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

This project investigated the comparative animal performance of the new psyllid resistant Leucaena, “Redlands”, against a standard modern cultivar, Wonder graze. It also quantified the reduction in methane emissions by cattle from Redlands and Wonder graze and collected data on the growth performance of cattle fed both cultivars.

Research project

Investigating the causes of calf losses

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

This project seeks to revolutionise research into calf mortality by facilitating the identification of the time and location of calving. The activity of calves can then be monitored, so that researchers can be notified when a calf dies and can easily locate the calf to conduct a necropsy.

2nd Edition Leuceana guide for establishment & Management

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

The primary aim of this project is to update the 1st edition of the grazier manual, “Leucaena A guide to establishment and management” with new content, material and relevant producer case studies, to create a 2ndedition of the manual for publication that would support the adoption and impact of grazing...

"The Sweet Spot": Improving breeder herd performance through optimal pasture utilisation

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

The level of pasture utilisation required for optimal cattle breeder productivity in northern Australia is unknown. Therefore, this project will find existing data to identify the pasture utilisation rates, improve the capacity of models to predict breeder performance and to develop tools to improve breeder productivity in the north.

A novel semen extender to accelerate genetic improvement programs

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

The aim of this project is to make artificial insemination viable for more producers, by developing a medium that extends the life of bull semen. This means that semen samples will be able to maintain fertility over several weeks without the need for cryopreservation, which will improve the logistics of...

Reducing calf loss due to exposure

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

This project investigated the impact of providing shade to commercial beef heifers, to reduce foetal and calf loss in rangeland situations. The findings will help support and make on-farm management recommendations, particularly in the Northern Downs where large numbers of breeding females graze treeless rangelands.

Fit for purpose biochar to improve efficiency in ruminants

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

The National Livestock Methane Program identified the inclusion of biochar into ruminants diets as a high research priority to establish a carbon-neutral industry by 2030 (CN30). This project will demonstrate that the manufacture of biochar can be manipulated to yield a high quality, consistent product that can be readily incorporated...

Optimising heifer development and manage

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

Achieving maximum lifetime reproductive performance requires that heifers conceive early, calve unassisted, raise a viable calf and re-breed early. This project comprises an integrated RD&E effort that will achieve a 10% increase in reproductive efficiencies.
