Research project

Evaluation of a Mycobacterium cell wall

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

This project will investigate the potential of an innate immune stimulating compound, a Mycobacterium cell wall fraction, to provide short term, broad-based disease protection against bovine respiratory disease (BRD) until protective responses from vaccination develop. We will also investigate the potential for the MCWF, when co-administered with BRD vaccines, to...

Development of a novel oral vaccine for Bovine Respiratory Disease logo
Research project

Development of a novel oral vaccine for Bovine Respiratory Disease

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

This project will determine whether an oral vaccine platform can induce specific immunity for bovine respiratory disease in cattle. If deemed successful, further research and development will be required to determine the value proposition of oral vaccine.

Determination of bovine respiratory disease logo
Research project

Determination of bovine respiratory disease

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

This project will determine the accuracy(sensitivity, specificity) and ability to determine stage of disease for a range of currently available and developing bovine respiratory disease diagnostic tests relative to the gold standard of pulmonary lesions at the time of diagnosis.

Bovine respiratory disease pathogen antimicrobial resistance surveillance and genetic sequencing logo
Research project

Bovine respiratory disease pathogen antimicrobial resistance surveillance and genetic sequencing

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

This project will conduct bovine respiratory disease pathogen surveillance at eight Australian feedlots to understand the correlation between use of in-feed and injectable meta-phylaxis on antimicrobial resistance. In addition, long range sequencing of Pasteurella multicide and Mannheimia hemolytica will occur to understand genetic mechanisms driving antimicrobial resistance.

Research project

Effect of monensin on antimicrobial resistance of feedlot manure

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

This project will conduct a literature review on the effect of ionophores and bambermycins on antimicrobial resistance of the microbiome, E coli, Salmonella and Enterococcus in beef cattle and wider food animal production. It will also determine through experimentation in the feedlot industry, the effect of monensin on antimicrobial resistance...

Research project

Feedlot animal welfare benchmarking

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

Continuous improvement of animal welfare is essential for maintaining consumer and community support for grain-fed beef. This proposes to develop a framework for internal animal welfare benchmarking for the Australian feedlot industry.

Research project

Evaluation of shade and shelter solutions

Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA)

This project will evaluate the influence of unshaded, shaded and shelter on the health, welfare, performance and carcase characteristics from feedlot cattle in Southern climatic zones. Increasing climate variability is increasing severity of heat load events and rainfall in winter.
