AgriFutures Australia

AgriFutures supports rural industries through R&D, leadership, and global innovation.

About AgriFutures

AgriFutures Australia represents 13 rural industries and invests in research and development (R&D) for emerging industries, responds to workforce and leadership needs through program development, addresses national agricultural challenges and engages globally to drive agrifood innovation.

AgriFutures partners with Australian rural industries and the Australian Government through the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. Other stakeholder groups include research providers, industry associations, other RDCs, compliance agencies, supply chain companies, community leaders, individual farmers and the public.

As a Commonwealth statutory RDC, AgriFutures is an Australian Government entity with a board of directors appointed by the Minister for Agriculture, based on recommendations from a selection committee.

AgriFutures works with startups and scaleups through various programs, primarily through AgriFutures evokeAG. and  AgriFutures growAG..

Key differences & extra responsibilities

Broader industry focus:

  • Unlike commodity-specific RDCs (e.g. Meat & Livestock Australia or the Grains Research and Development Corporation), AgriFutures supports emerging, niche and established industries that do not have their own RDC.
  • AgriFutures plays a thought leadership role in rural innovation, often engaging in policy development, strategic foresight and cross-industry collaboration.

National programs beyond industry-specific R&D:

AgriFutures manages several cross-sectoral programs that no other RDC handles:

  • AgriFutures Rural Women's Award: celebrates and empowers female leaders in rural communities
  • AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship: supports young people pursuing careers in agriculture
  • National Challenges and Opportunities: research on issues affecting all rural industries, like climate change, biosecurity and agricultural innovation
  • Emerging Industries: research to develop industries like industrial hemp, seaweed, insects, hazelnuts and coffee into viable sectors
  • Global Innovation Networks: programs to support agrifood innovation through the two-day event, evokeAG. and the online platform, growAG..

Headquarters: Wagga Wagga, Australia with offices in Sydney and Canberra.
