Understanding the epidemiology of Ramularia in barley

Ramularia collo-cygni (Rcc) is a fungal pathogen that poses a significant threat to Australian barley as it causes Ramularia leaf spot (RLS). Accurate identification of RLS is essential for effective crop management. The investment aims to provide critical information that will enable accurate identification of RLS and subsequently enable prompt action, minimize crop mismanagement, and yield losses. The study will investigate Rcc genetic and population diversity, disease incidence, triggers and potential regional relationships. I will also determine the contribution of seed, stubble and weeds in pathogen dissemination and disease development. Understanding its economic impact and epidemiology, will address knowledge gaps related to yield and revenue loss and; inform future investments to develop targeted management strategies. Subsequently, growers will benefit from this knowledge by having access to best practices and recommendations for sustainable barley production.
