Traits of importance for aerobic 'DryRice' varieties for the Riverina region
The Australian rice production system in southern NSW has historically been reliant on flooded conditions that consume large amounts of water. This investment targets the selection of genotypes with optimal performance in aerobic growing conditions that also exhibit cold tolerance. Traits of importance will be identified and communicated to breeders. It is expected that optimal genotypes combined with best management practices can generate yields of aerobic rice approaching that of flooded systems, with reduced use of irrigation and hence higher water productivity.
