To understand the relative health of a sugarcane crop through the use of drone technology.

The project aimed to demonstrate the practical applications and benefits of drone technology for sugarcane growers. Throughout 2022, Plane Creek Productivity Services Limited (PCPSL) completed over 55 drone projects for growers, showcasing various uses of drones in agriculture.

Initially, the project planned to hold a workshop targeting 20 growers, but this was expanded to include detailed sections on the drone project during regular shed meetings. These meetings provided an opportunity to discuss the findings and benefits of drone technology with around 10 growers attending each session. The also project included several practical applications of drone technology, such as monitoring weed infestations, soldier fly damage, drainage issues, and soil health.

For example, flights helped identify vine infestations and soldier fly damage, allowing targeted interventions. Similarly, flights addressed drainage issues and soil health variations, leading to improved crop management and yields. The project also involved mapping weed infestations, aiding in effective weed control strategies.

Additionally, the project expanded its scope to include other functions such as scouting for suitable plant material, assessing planting operations, mapping fire damage, and monitoring clean seed distribution plots. These activities demonstrated the versatility and value of drone technology in various aspects of farm management.

Overall, it well-received by growers as is provided real-life examples of how drones could be a valuable day-to-day tool for growers and productivity services, enhancing farm management practices and supporting more informed decision-making.
