The bigger blue potential for Asparagopsis: A review of the potential for blue carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and biodiversity credits for the Australian Asparagopsis seaweed industry
The project provided a comprehensive and contemporary synthesis of relevant information on carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and biodiversity (B) uptake and creation potential. It reviewed existing and potential schemes that could be implemented to offer environmental benefits and commercial opportunities for the emerging industry. The project involved delivering a detailed review of research, theories, and proposed policies related to C, N, P, and B schemes, generating recommendations for regulators on scheme implementation and operation, and identifying potential environmental, social, and economic benefits from successful schemes. Key objectives included undertaking a comprehensive literature review on the science and benefits of seaweed mariculture, exploring credit/trading schemes, developing policy positions for ASSA to advocate to the government, outlining potential credit scheme structures and their implementation, and preparing communication outputs for ASSA/FRDC stakeholders.
