Standardised emissions calculations for processors

This project further develops a digitalised, industry wide, standardised methodology, for supply chain Greenhouse Gas Accounting and reporting. Since launching in May 2024, the AIA Environmental Accounting Platform (EAP) has continued to be improved, with additional functionality and new commodity calculators scoped and deployed. From their whole of industry engagement, with stakeholders across all Ag commodities and food and fibre supply chains, they have identified a strong need for: • Producers, feedlots, processors and manufacturers to be able to calculate emissions from processing, value-adding, or packaging, using a common, digitalised & standardised methodology. • Producers, feedlots, processors and manufacturers need to be able to share the emissions intensity of their outputs across their whole supply chain in a reliable, aligned, and trustworthy way. AIA’s work in developing new aquaculture and wine calculators has catalysed the introduction of a ‘processing, manufacturing and packaging’ feature, which will enable wine and aquaculture producers/growers to calculate emissions from processing, value-adding and packaging. This new feature has the potential to be turned into a standalone module which can be used for other commodities, including red meat and other (large and small) livestock classes. AMPC funding will enable AIA to deliver this module to livestock spreadsheets and the Environmental Accounting Platform (EAP). Under this proposal, AIA will also develop a processor calculator, which would enable the red meat sector to calculate emissions through the supply chain, using the common, standardised methodology chosen by the DAFF. A processor calculator module aligned with GAF (and the new standards once available) would help to streamline and standardise emissions reporting across the red meat supply chain. Uniting around a common methodology will also support a consistent approach to development and delivery of verifiable credential transfer functionality. This project aligns with the objectives of AMPC’s ongoing Environmental Performance Review project. In particular, the recommendations from the 2024 Final Report around developing a standardised approach inclusive of scope 3 emissions, using a common protocol to improve quality of data, reduce cost and simplify the compliance reporting process for processors.
