Southern Ocean IPA - Science to support Australia’s Southern Ocean Fisheries 2018-2020
The project "Southern Ocean IPA - Science to support Australia's Southern Ocean Fisheries" aimed to address the needs of the HIMI fishery and Australian research activities in CCAMLR's exploratory fisheries. The benefits of the project include improving data collection programs, reducing uncertainty in icefish and toothfish assessments, adapting the fishery to climate change, and mitigating bycatch of fish, skate/ray, seabirds, and cetaceans. The project supported the sustainable management of the fishery by providing robust estimates of key population parameters, developing stock assessment methods, evaluating environmental impacts, and implementing mitigation strategies. The research conducted during the project period has contributed to the knowledge and understanding of Southern Ocean fisheries, enabling informed decision-making and supporting the long-term sustainability of the targeted species and the ecosystem as a whole.
