Soil moisture sensor network in the medium/low rainfall environment in the Northern Wimmera

The project aimed to establish a soil moisture monitoring network to benefit local farmers by providing real-time soil moisture status. This initiative was designed to help farmers make better decisions regarding crop rotations, nitrogen management, and hay cutting.

Key achievements of the project include:
  • Network Expansion: The project started with five weather stations and nine soil moisture probes, which quickly expanded to 17 weather stations and 25 soil moisture probes. This rapid growth was driven by strong uptake from both existing site owners and new members of the community group.
  • Information Day: The group held an information day to provide an overview of the network and encourage further site uptake. The event featured presentations from experts and included a question-and-answer session, helping attendees understand the data being collected and how to use the dashboard display.
  • Dashboard Improvements: The project faced challenges in displaying the vast amount of collected data clearly. To address this, the dashboard is undergoing updates to make it more user-friendly and to include powerful spatial maps, adding significant value to the network.
  • Practical Benefits: Localised weather information from the sites has been particularly useful for paddock operations, especially spraying, as it provides real-time conditions that cannot be accurately observed from the local town station. The group continues to learn how to interpret and use soil moisture data effectively.
Overall, the project successfully established a comprehensive soil moisture monitoring network, providing valuable data to support better farming decisions.
