Risk profile for paralytic shellfish toxins in Tasmanian Periwinkles

The project aims to develop a risk profile for paralytic shellfish toxins (PST) in Tasmanian Periwinkles, addressing uncertainties surrounding their accumulation from harmful algal blooms. By assessing field and laboratory exposures, the project will determine the risk of PST bioaccumulation and identify suitable biotoxin management zones. It will also evaluate the appropriateness of using the bivalve PST regulatory limit for Periwinkles and generate a risk profile to guide future risk management strategies. This will ensure the protection of public health, support market access, and enable cost-effective food safety management programs for the Periwinkle industry in Tasmania.
