Review of the AMIC Industry Animal Welfare Standard

Animal welfare in meat processing continues to be criticised by animal rights groups and other stakeholders, and it is important that processors are able to demonstrate their commitment to science-based outcomes. In addition, trading partners are becoming increasingly focused on good animal welfare outcomes. This project will deliver a review of the AMIC Industry Animal Welfare Standard for Livestock Processing Establishments Preparing Meat for Human Consumption Australian Livestock to ensure it remains current, effective, and aligned with science, regulation, and community expectations. The Standard underpins the voluntary Australian Animal Welfare Certification System (AAWCS) and supports credible third-party certification. The project reflects the commitment of meat processors to impartiality, transparency, and continuous improvement in standard-setting to support good animal welfare outcomes in the red meat processing sector. It supports the industry's social licence to operate and market access.
