Remote sensing natural capital for wool

Over the past few years, La Trobe University have developed a proof of concept farm scale natural capital accounts that measures and reports on natural capital and environmental performance at farm-scale, which will be leveraged within this project. The demand for farm-scale accounts is outstripping current capacity for generating them and this is largely due to the expense and technological constraints associated with classifying on-farm natural capital assets. This project is critical to address these cost and technology contraints, by harnessing Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, and state-of-art remote sensed products. This project aligns with the SmartSat CRC Maya Nul Research Program to develop Earth Observation (EO) capability to advance Australia's agricultual sector and will leverage an existing database of thousands of field-validated assessment points collected by La Trobe Unitversity, to expand and improve the approach and methods of classifying farm-scale natural capital accounts. This project will usilise SmartSat CRC's Earths Observation capability, La Trobe University's expertise in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and Farming for the Future's extensive dataset of ground-truthed observation points. Within the timeframe of this project, the project outputs (processing and models to predict on-farm natural capital assets) will be tested and demonstrated through application to a suite of new farms participating in the Farming for the Future program - they will be measured in terms of the accuracy and reliability of their predictive power.
