Progressing implementation of genetic selection in Australian Honeybees
Building on earlier proof-of-concept work this project aims to advance the genetic improvement of Australian honeybees for production and health traits through the development of Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs). The project includes a combination of: (i) analysis of queen relationships in a focal breeding program using more powerful genetic analyses; (ii) collecting health data, including rapid hygienic behaviour; (iii) building a relationship map of Australian queen breeding programs; (iv) working with the industry to develop educational material on practical breeding programs; (v) scoping with industry the potential to develop a coordinated queen evaluation program.
The outcomes will be more effective breeding programs for production and hive health.
