Productivity Booster - Loss Reducer

The project aimed to increase the adoption of new technologies, specifically sugarcane harvesting yield and loss monitors, to enhance profitability in the Herbert sugarcane industry.

The primary objective was to demonstrate the benefits of improved harvesting practices through the use of yield and loss monitors. A demonstration trial was conducted during the 2022 harvest season, where growers, harvesting contractors, and milling representatives observed the latest technology in action.

Following the trial, the results were presented during the offseason at a harvesting forum, with the data showing a significant increase in both cane and sugar yields when adopting improved harvesting practices. Specifically, the local trial demonstrated an increase in cane yield from 90.8 t/ha to 107.0 t/ha and sugar yield from 12.4 t/ha to 14.0 t/ha.

The project also led to the adoption of new technologies by four harvesting groups for the 2023 season. These groups are now utilizing harvesting decision support tools to modify extractor fan and ground speed based on optimal practices. This has resulted in a reduction of cane loss by 9.5 t/ha and sugar loss by 150 kg/ha.

Overall, the project successfully increased productivity per hectare, improved harvesting practices, and enhanced profitability for growers and harvesting contractors in the Herbert region. The adoption of yield and loss monitors, along with decision support tools, has allowed for more efficient and sustainable harvesting operations.
