Optimisation of use of probiotics for control of Salmonella in hens

Probiotics, prebiotics, or their combinations (synbiotics) are used in poultry production for enhancing overall bird performance. This project was conducted to understand the role of commercial probiotics and synbiotics in the control of Salmonella and their interactions with gut microbiota in layer production systems. Both pen and field trials were conducted to understand the effects of short-term and strategic feeding of probiotics and synbiotics on Salmonella shedding. The structure of gut microbiota was studied in the presence and absence of Salmonella Typhimurium infection.
