NGN: Improving the management of grass weeds in grain oat crops in the Western Region

This project aims to provide growers in the western region with improved strategies for the effective management of problematic grass weed species in oat-grain crops. Oat production in Australia has remained consistent, with Western Australia leading in production. There's a projected increase in oat cultivation, driven by its grain value and farmers' interest. Oats are favoured for their frost and waterlogging tolerance and are beneficial in cereal-dominated farming systems, showing resistance to certain soilborne diseases. Farmers can choose to harvest oats for grain or hay, enhancing profitability. However, weed management, particularly grass weeds, is a significant challenge due to limited herbicide options and smaller market demand compared to wheat and barley. Oats' susceptibility to herbicide damage further complicates weed control. Despite oats' competitiveness with weeds, there's a lack of research on their impact on weed populations. There's a need for tailored weed management strategies for oats in Australia, including chemical, non-chemical, and cultural methods. Integrating Integrated Weed Management (IWM) strategies is crucial for oats due to limited herbicide options, presenting opportunities to validate methods to suppress and control problematic weeds like wild oats, annual ryegrass, and brome grass.
