Next generation decision support tools to support sustainable aquaculture in Storm Bay

To expand into new coastal and offshore areas, the Tasmanian Salmon Industry needs to maintain the support of State Government and the Tasmanian community by clearly demonstrating responsible stewardship and sustainable use of the marine environment. The Salmon Industry is poised to expand in a number of locations around Tasmania and need to understand the current environmental conditions, quantify their potential environmental footprint in each new location and identify practical impact mitigation strategies sufficient for ongoing sustainable farming operations. This investment supports potential expansion into Storm Bay in Tasmania by providing relocatable modelling capability that can supply enhanced resolution environmental information, access to a public online decision support tool to assist with the management of waterborne contaminants and marine biosecurity and access to an online decision support tool to assist with the management of water quality. While the scope of this project is constrained to Storm Bay, the tools and capabilities developed will reduce the time and budget required for future projects to deploy these tools and capabilities in other regions of interest.
