Monitoring and mitigating interactions between small pelagic fisheries and dolphins: literature review and analysis of fishery data

Small pelagic fisheries sometimes interact with dolphins. For example, dolphins are sometimes encircled and/or entangled in purse seine-nets used in the South Australia Sardine Fishery. Community expectations and State and Commonwealth legislation require fisheries to take all reasonable measures to prevent interactions with dolphins. This investment will review methods to monitor and mitigate interactions between small pelagic fisheries and dolphins and undertake fishery-based trials to identify acoustic devices and deployment strategies that mitigate dolphin interactions.
