Measures for Environmental Performance

AWI has been investing in the Farming for the Future (FFTF) program, which is a national change program exploring the business case for improving on farm natural capital for agricultural industries. A key component of this research is the development of methods/metrics to measure natural capital and the management of biodiversity in a way that is applicable to all farms. At the same time, AWI has been developing its Woolmark+ strategy which aims to connect nature-positive woolgrowers with brands wanting to purchase nature-positive wool and meat. To improve the capacity of brands to recognise and support farmers, such metrics may then be 'harmonised' with existing approaches and adopted and broadly used in industry (e.g., Sustainawool, ZQRX, RWS, Nativa Regen, Land to Market). These metrics may then be leveraged by industry however, harmonisation or coherence of metrics used by sustainability and reporting frameworks is desirable. It reduces the need for farmers to collect different data for each individual framework which improves farmer’s scheme portability (ability to switch to different schemes). Through the partnership with FFTF, AWI ensures Australian woolgrowers can have consistency, portability and transparency in reporting without eliminating differentiation between frameworks, using Woolmark+ as the market lead.
