Measurement of Follicle density and diameter

Current measures of wool follicle density are expensive and time consuming as they require a biopsy sample of the animal’s skin, chemical processing and microscopic analysis. This process is expensive and can take several weeks. This investment explores the potential use of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), commonly used in ophthalmology and cardiology, to develop a handheld device that enables woolgrowers to measure follicle density and diameter using a fast and non-invasive technique. The tool would allow the early selection of high value sheep in breeding programs increasing the rate of genetic gain and profitability of the flock.
