Maintaining cultural practices and building knowledge and capacity to support sustainable fishing of the Gynburra on Narungga Sea Country

In 2018 the Narungga people of Yorke Peninsula signed the historic 10-year Buthera Agreement with the South Australia Government, to drive development, economic enterprise and collaborative engagement. This study by Narungga people sought to improve understanding of the fishery biology and ecology of the culturally significant Gynburra species, also known as Butterfish or Strongfish. The project had an explicit focus on developing the skills, capabilities and capacities of Narungga people in fishery science and stewardship to support sustainable fishing of the Gynburra on Narungga Sea Country, and strengthen their cultural ownership by extending the findings to the broader community.
