Improving data on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander marine resource use to inform decision-making

The level of engagement in recreational and traditional fishing by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is poorly documented at the national scale. This information is vital in identifying suitable future fisheries developmental, stewardship and training opportunities in Indigenous communities. Several approaches to collecting data on traditional and Indigenous recreational fisheries require evaluation. The proposed project will support a series of regional meetings with key stakeholders and two national level expert workshops that will work with community groups to identify, develop and plan appropriate methods and strategies to address the critical information gaps in a manner that also aims to integrate non-scientific cultural knowledge flows.
