Identifying and mitigating obstacles to uptake and adoption of aquatic animal welfare practices by the Australian Fishing Industry

Achieving animal welfare practices that are based in science and socially acceptable has been recognised by governments and the fishing industry as a key challenge. Previous investment generated important insights into the factors preventing greater stakeholder and community trust in the management of animal welfare in the seafood industry. This investment will determine the extent to which fishers and aquaculture farms are applying best practice in Australia, identify factors impeding the adoption of recommended aquatic animal welfare practices, and identify appropriate strategies to improve adoption of those recommended practices. This investment will contribute to the Australian fishing industry's overall capacity to design and implement extension programs and increase the likelihood of more widespread and enduring practice-change related to animal welfare practices in wild-catch commercial fishing and aquaculture
