Herbicide resistance in lucerne seed production systems in the south east regions of South Australia

Lucerne is an important pasture species in Australia. It is critical to manage weeds effectively in lucerne seed crops to meet seed certification requirements. An integral part of weed control in lucerne is in the use of herbicides, but dependence on few herbicides increases the risk of the development of resistance in weeds. This project will conduct a weed survey of commercial production areas in the main seed producing area of Australia to collect seeds and generate data on the current level of herbicide resistance in weeds p[opulations, including; annual ryegrass, barley grass and sowthistle. The survey results will inform the development of specific integrated weed management strategies for the lucerne seed industry to extend the life of important herbicides.
