Fly Farm - small commercial pilot scale evaluation and optimisation
This project is a productivity improvement and emissions reduction initiative. It aims to valorise existing waste streams from red meat processing facilities that currently have low to no value, and/or are a cost to dispose of. The technology and process will utilise insects, and build on prior R&D (i.e. 2019-1061 RnD4Profit Closing the Loop: Black Soldier Fly Technology to Convert Food and Fertiliser), to turn certain JBS facility feed-stocks into potential commercial animal feed / soil enhancement products with revenue streams. The prior R&D, managed by APL, investigated fertiliser / soil enhancer applications, however did not conduct trials for higher value animal & pet feed applications.
This project investment intends to cover fees and expenses (i.e. no capital acquisition/s) as below;
* three months dedicated access to an off-site, third party owned &
operated, production facility,
* feed-stock logistics,
* third party operated batch processing of the lower value JBS feed-stocks (e.g. paunch and condemns), and
* management of feed-stock testing, recipe manipulation, process flow stabilisation, and output optimisation.
FlyFarm (i.e. third party facility owner & operator) has already undertaken 100 - 500kg batch trials using JBS feed-stocks, and both organisations have the confidence to now progress to larger scale trials in this project of up to 5 tonne per week (i.e. noting the facility has 5 tonne per day capacity). The initial batch trials were not sufficient in size to properly optimise the process and/or engage potential end users such as Bunnings.
