Eggs for healthy aging: Optimising nutrition in older adults
Australia’s rapidly aging population creates both healthcare challenges and opportunities for the egg industry. Despite being an excellent source of high-quality protein and essential nutrients, egg's role in supporting older adult nutrition remains understudied. Eggs are well-suited for older adults but are currently underutilised in aged care facilities.
This project investigates the role of eggs in improving nutritional status and wellbeing in older Australians by combining systematic evidence synthesis with a 12-week trial in retirement village settings to evaluate how consuming 2 eggs daily impacts nutritional status, physical function, and quality of life in older adults at risk of malnutrition. The project culminates in developing an evidence-based implementation toolkit to support increased egg consumption in this growing demographic.
