Egg consumption and late-life depression - a review of the evidence

Growing evidence suggests egg consumption may be associated with a lower risk of depression later in life. However, the Australian Dietary Guidelines and the Australian Heart Foundation do not include recommended servings of eggs to be consumed each week as part of a healthy diet, or the benefits of consumption of eggs to reduce the risk of depression. This project aims to provide evidence to inform policy advice for dietary guidelines and prevention of late-life depression. The project will highlight the mental health-related benefits of egg consumption, by reviewing existing research and analysing primary data to assess the relationship between egg consumption and the risk of late-life depression. In addition, a dose-relationship analysis will determine the optimal frequency of egg consumption for prevention of late-life depression.
